The Whip FAQ - The Answers
How do I install The
Whip? - The
Whip comes with a standard Windows 95 or Windows NT setup. You will
normally install The Whip directly from the CD (or from the 3 1/2
inch disks). Follow the on-screen prompts to select a location to
install The Whip. The Whip will require about 20 Mb of disk space
for an initial installation, the space required will increase as
you add more races to the database. Typical users find that the
database will increase in size by 5 - 10 Mb per year of use.(You
can of course archive old races - but doing so may affect your statistics
and analysis). To complete the installation you will need to register
your copy of The Whip.(See the FAQ question on registration for
more information).
How do I upgrade from
the demo version to the full product?
- To enable the full capabilities of The Whip you will need to register
the product. You can do this by either phoning us (07 4058 0046)
or sending us an email to sales@thewhip.com.au.
How do I register
The Whip? -
Once you have your registration code, just enter your name and the
code into the registration form and your product will be immediately
registered.
I've upgraded to a
new computer and now The Whip doesn't work?
- Under certain circumstances The Whip will need to be re-registered
on a new machine. If you have upgraded your computer and now can't
use The Whip, just contact us on support@thewhip.com.au and we will
immediately provide you with the re-registration details you need.
Why should I compact
The Whip Database?
- Compacting the database will reduce the amount of space that the
database uses on your hard disk. An additional, and important benefit,
is that your database will also perform faster after being compacted.
How do I compact The
Whip Database?
- To compact The Whip database you must make sure that all of The
Whip windows are closed. Then you can use the Compact Database option
from the Utilities section to begin the compaction. Compaction may
take several minutes to complete. You will be given a message when
the compaction has finished.
How often should I
compact The Whip Database?
- this depends entirely on how often you use the database and how
much new data (horses, jockeys and races) that you add. Compacting
will never damage your database so you may want to compact at the
beginning (or end) of every session. A more moderate approach is
to compact say once a week or once a month.
When would I need
to repair The Whip Database?
- Under normal working conditions The Whip database will function
without problems. However, power fluctuations or computer problems
may impact on your database. Repairing the database will remove
any problems that may occur. Do understand though, that if some
of the data has been damaged, the repair function may not be able
to restore all records. Repairing the database is an option available
from the Utilities section of the program
What's the best way
to back-up the The Whip Database?
- You do not need to backup The Whip main program, since you can
always re-install it from CD. Your database should be backed up
however. Tape drives or Zip drives are the best option when backing
up the database. You can use floppy disks (3.5in) but you may need
several to complete the backup, and it will take considerably longer
to do. Before beginning the backup you should compact the database
- this will minimise the size of the backed up files.
How often should I
back-up The Whip Database?
- Your data in The Whip is extremely important. Having a recent
backup is the best insurance policy you could have. The best recommendation
would be to backup the database at the end of every session where
you have made any changes or additions. At a minimum you should
consider once a week as standard practice.
How do I use a back-up
database if I can't repair the original database?
- Move your original database to another directory on your system
and then copy your backup database into The Whips directory. Now
rename this copied backup database to "race.mdb". You
will now be able to use your backup database as a replacement.
Which version of The
Whip do I need?
- We are also producing movies to be included on our demo CD showing
each of the products in action. If you're still not sure then drop
us a line and we can advise (support@thewhip.com.au). We are also
looking at an upgrade policy allowing you to move from Lite to Express
and even to the Professional version.
